Dream Until It’s Your Reality

We often forget that the USA is still considered the land of opportunity. It took going to New York City, as we did over the weekend, to appreciate the full immersion experience and energy of all the cultures, languages and dreams pulsing on the streets. I saw it scribbled as graffiti on a building – “Dream Until It’s Your Reality”. It is the mindset I like to encourage; it’s our American story.

The message about dreams came from numerous directions. There are the dreams being realized by those we came to see – my sister in a play and musician Cory Henry. Our Uber drivers were the litmus test to this story. They tell the account of their dreams being made real. One from India works 12-hours driving, opened a carry out Indian restaurant during the pandemic and helped 2 of his 4 kids get into medical school.

Amidst the hustle and eagerness, you recognize the determination, the backbone that has made America a success. Dreams are being made into reality.  Let me explore it with you.

YOUR DREAM IS ALWAYS UNFOLDING

Your dream is not a one-time experience, it is a reflection of a constant process of refinement. What was important when you were young will invariably change.  The point is to keep expanding the dream of the life you want, for there is always something to improve, new directions to explore. What is important now?

I was in the city to see my sister perform in a play written and directed by her theater company, The Talking Band, an award-winning off-Broadway company that stays relevant by following the issues that are current. * This play addressed the profound and difficult issues of getting older, losing people you love and finding new meaning despite the loses. The surprise – it was very funny and effectively delivered a message of allowing change, with a reminder to not take yourself so seriously.

PUSH YOUR BOUNDARIES

To keep yourself excited and involved in your own dreams, consider how you can expand your knowledge, change up your experience and stay in the flow. To keep your dream alive, you need to keep growing and evolving. What does that mean for you?

We saw lots of examples of this expansion. The play incorporated exciting new video technology in its stage design. There was original music, singing and dancing with wonderful choreography –  hysterically done. We also saw one of Lee’s musical heroes – keyboard player Cory Henry – playing his new Grammy nominated music. * All stretching the boundaries of what they’ve done before. There’s inspiration in watching all this.

APPRECIATE YOUR EVOLUTION

What started as one dream, invariably unfolds into another and another. In my coaching and therapy work, I describe this as following a red thread in a weaving, connecting your own evolution of your essence and your interests together. By tracing it through the course of your life, you can see how you have expanded and developed, while staying true to yourself. Appreciate how your dreams have evolved.

I’ve been watching my sister and the primary actors in her theater company for 50 years now. It’s been amazing to see how their skill and their message keeps becoming more poignant– and entertaining. What a treat! Seeing Lee’s favorite organ player be so much in his element, while doing things that are completely new, was a beautiful illustration of his evolution.  Notice how you are growing too and give yourself some appreciation.

Seeing the NYC graffiti “Dream Until It’s Your Reality” prompted me to notice all the ways this is true for people coming to this country from afar, to examples in my own life. We start with one dream, and it continually unfolds throughout the course of our lives. When we push ourselves to grow, our dream becomes a tapestry of our own expansion and finally with some perspective, you start to see your own evolution. It’s all good, and all important.
