At the World Music Expo (WOMEX) in Tampere, Finland, I experienced the thrill of witnessing musicians from across the world finding their voice through artistic expression. Their showcases were impressive, humbling, a dizzying array of diversity and authenticity.
I was there on behalf of GreenRoom Exchange, our nonprofit, to scout for talent to bring to the Bluegrass. While I was taken with fancy showmanship, I was more deeply moved by the power of authentic expression. What I realized was that giving voice to authenticity is a worthy goal, even for those of us with no artistic talent!
Here are some observations:
YOU DON’T NEED BELLS AND WHISTLES
There were beautiful costumes, representing their culture of origin, fancy choreography and tightly rehearsed presentations. But those who made the strongest impression were heartfelt and authentic. It outshined the glamour, their faces glowing, in their smiles and eyes, their emotion and passion real, something rehearsal can’t take away. We all have this authenticity, if we give it expression.
AUTHENTICITY COMES FROM THE HEART
Music, like all artistic forms, is an expression of ideas, beliefs, and a sense of self, especially when it is authentic and not about glory. We know what is important and dear to our heart. It’s in what you do, how you interact, and your values. See the attached videos as an example. Whatever is most important for you, ask yourself how you give it voice.
OWN YOUR PASSION AND PERSPECTIVE
As we witness the takeover of minds, young and old, by calculating media brainwashing, algorithms to hype, sell, and persuade for other’s greed and profit, the need for authenticity becomes increasingly crucial. Take the challenge to be more real, honest, direct and forthcoming in giving voice to what is significant to you. We need your drive, passion and authenticity now more than ever. No more sleepwalking, just going along, under reacting to be nice. It’s time to give yourself voice – in whatever form works for you. Allow yourself authentic expression.
