You don’t usually think of a weekend in NYC as a way to indulge your senses, but it sure did. We were there to attend Global Fest at Lincoln Center and took advantage of every opportunity. We saw friends and family, ate fabulous food, took in exhibits at MOMO and Arte Museum, heard incredible music, and wondered the streets, taking it all in.
The 5 senses. vision, smell, sound, touch and taste are guides to our emotional wellbeing, our sense of satisfaction, joy and comfort. When we get it all together in one package, we become elated. Or at least I do. Learning the impact of your senses helps you know what brings you joy – your guide to satisfaction.

Paying attention to my sensory reactions is a helpful antidote to being distressed by current politics. Here’s things to consider.
NOTICE WHAT SENSES SPEAK TO YOU
I’m sensory sensitive – strongly influenced by visuals, sounds, taste, smell and feel. Give me a beautiful place that smells lovely, feels comfortable, with beautiful music, something fantastic to eat and I swoon. I like them all. But visuals usually let me know if I’m going to have a positive experience. Without that, it takes longer for the others to override the initial negative impression.
GIVE YOURSELF MORE SENSORY EXPERIENCES
If you’re feeling upset, a sensory bath may provide the soothing you need. Seeing Monet’s Waterlilies and Rousseau’s The Dream at MOMA * filled me with joy. I loved the sensory filled show of light, sound and smells at the ARTE museum*. Hearing incredible music was a thrill, especially Insun Park from South Korea*. And exceptional food I’ve never had – in this care, Georgian at Chama Mama * was also a delight.
NOTICE YOUR JOY
Learn to notice what brings satisfaction and joy to stay present in the moment. This exercise in mindfulness overrides worry and distress and can bring peace, relaxing you in your body and mind. I like having new experiences, others may find comfort in the predictable. When you let your senses guide your choices, you’re more likely to have a special time. Go ahead – indulge your senses!
