Replace Rude Disrespect With Honor, Dignity, and Respect

While nationally we witness rude disrespect in situations that call for the opposite, there are still instances of people showing honor, dignity and respect. Here are some examples that are worthy of modeling.

I was inspired by the exemplary leadership of these people this week:

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear provided an inspiring speech on Juneteenth at the unveiling of “Journey to Freedom”.  a statue honoring Lewis and Harriet Hayden, two brave Americans, who escaped slavery and helped thousands of others in their journey to freedom. Gov Andy Besher called slavery “our nation’s greatest injustice”.

“We cannot ignore the mistakes of our past. We cannot turn away from even the most painful moments and pretend they don’t exist. Instead, we must learn from them and make progress for a better tomorrow. While our federal government tries to erase a lot of our history, today in Kentucky we’re celebrating it. We are celebrating it and committing to preserving important people like Lewis and Harriet. We’re committed to celebrating these leaders and educators about the aspects of our history that for too long have been overlooked.” *

In addition, there was a letter from Sophie and Colin Hortman, the adult children of slain former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives Melissa Hortman, and her husband, Mark.

“Our parents touched so many lives, and they leave behind an incredible legacy of dedication to their community that will live on in us, …”Stand up for what you believe in, especially if that thing is justice and peace. Hope and resilience are the enemy of fear. This tragedy must become a moment for us to come together. Hold your loved ones a little closer. Love your neighbors. Treat each other with kindness and respect. The best way to honor our parents’ memory is to do something, whether big or small, to make our community just a little better for someone else.” **

You get to decide how you want to show up. Model the values you believe in and would like to receive. Be polite, say something positive, show compassion and respect for others.

And please, reach out if you want more respect in your life.
