The lessons from the past were highlighted in a profound performance by M’ Power Rhythm, a Lexington KY group that teaches African drumming to youth*. In African Seeds: Bluegrass Roots, they told the story of African rhythm and its impact on modern music and dance. The term Sanfofa, the Ghanaian symbol of a bird looking over its shoulder, was highlighted as it means that it’s only when we incorporate the lessons of our past, that we can move forward.*

Now, more than ever, you need to be vigilant to the lessons of being true to your heritage, the difficult work to overcome hardship and the ability to creatively solve problems. This was told throughout the performance through moving stories of the perseverance of African people, taking their spiritual beliefs and rhythm with them to overcome the adversity of slavery, to make a mark in all areas of the arts.

Here are some thoughts on how this can pertain to you.
CLAIM YOUR HERITAGE
We all have a history that’s been passed down through generations about how cultural influences shaped your family narrative. Often there are stories of overcoming difficulties of poverty, war and strife to build a life against the odds. Claim the parts that are relevant to you and know you can learn from them.
RECOGNIZE HOW KNOWING YOUR ROOTS MAKES YOU STRONGER
As we witness history being erased to disempower and disenfranchise people who threaten the white supremacy narrative, take a look at your own family’s journey through the decades. Many of us came to the new world as immigrants, many have histories of being first people. Embedded in your history is likely evidence of true heroism. Claim what supports your empowerment story.
BE THE EMBODIMENT OF THE BEST LESSONS OF YOUR PAST
Given you have the reins of your life in your hands, how are you going to embody the lessons of your past to be the hero of your story? This is the focal point of the therapy/coaching I do with many people. Create the hero story you will be proud to have continued into future generations. I was certainly inspired by the performance’s lesson to be my best.
