Having free will and the ability to choose the details of your life is a privilege and responsibility. The argument of nature verses nurture often points to how we exercise our free will and choices. Never has this right been more important in our democratic country.
With the midterm elections, you have the opportunity to select people to represent the values you hold dear. I hope you are taking this seriously. Every day you choose how you show up and shape your surroundings. Both are important.
Here are some thoughts on exercising free will and choice.
CHOOSE HOW YOU VOTE
The enthusiasm of the No Kings marches suggests that many people are interested in seeing limits on authoritarian power. It will be up to all of us with those thoughts to cast a vote to make these changes occur. There is no manifestation wand that will make it happen. I’m exceedingly distressed that there is not more outrage over the sequence of events that have occurred. It’s time to step forward with action and make our choices known.
CHOOSE HOW YOU SHOW UP
Halloween offers a fun time to let your alter ego take the stage. I put on a red wig and presented a much more flamboyant, outspoken side and loved it. I spent my early years as an introvert and now love how extroversion allows me a fuller range of expression and authority. Despite what the Meyer’s Briggs test implies, you can move from one end of the continuum to the other. You choose how you show up – give yourself freer rein.
CHOOSE PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS
There is a slogan in AA that if you want to make real change in your lifestyle (that supports drinking) you need to choose different people, places and things. As a therapist, this is often the point of change that can make a big difference. But first, you have to boost your confidence enough to claim your worthiness to have what you want. If this is something you relate to, get the support you need to claim your right to choose the people, places and things that are congruent and validate who you are.
