Stepping into your greatness has come up in conversation with several clients and friends. If you want something great to happen in your life, you have to be clear and intentional about it and address what blocks you. We all have issues that can derail us – it’s how you face them that makes the difference.
The cornerstone of my work is helping people reach their full potential. What I have discovered with my clients is that there are set issues that stand in the way, all of which we have a degree of control over. It may take some work to undo them, but if you want something special to happen in your life, it’s absolutely worth the effort.
Here are the things I have been reviewing with people – the typical patterns that block people from reaching their full potential. See if you can relate.
The beginning point for everything, and certainly for launching greatness, is your vision for yourself. If there’s any pattern that is the most prevalent it is that you don’t see yourself in the fullness of your potential. When you play small, you will stay small. If that’s what you want, no problem, but don’t lament that something bigger isn’t happening if you haven’t allowed yourself to dream about it first.
Give yourself the option to imagine the fullness of what you can achieve. What’s your talent that wants your attention to develop into something great, or the business that needs the infusion of a big dream to grow? When you can fully imagine it, you can build it. Start with the dream, the vision of stepping into your potential. It doesn’t even have to be big – it can be something that you know will give you great satisfaction.
NEGATING SELF TALK
What if you have a clear dream, but also many hesitations why it won’t happen or won’t work? The thoughts may go like this – “I’m too old, I’m not talented enough, I don’t have the time, or the money, I can’t, I’m not worthy, nobody will support it or like it…” The versions are endless and very effective – they will ensure that nothing happens. And more important, that you will always feel bad about it. Regret is a terrible thing. Think about that.
There are effective strategies for addressing negative self-talk. Some involve taking it one step at a time and discovering that the thoughts are simply not true. Others involve resolving old issues that have resulted in negative self-perception. However those thoughts got there, you can change them and make them go away with the right support. This is the work that I mentioned that is worth doing. When you start to do what you love or dream of – you will step into your joy and delight. That is worth whatever price or time it takes.
RELATIONSHIPS THAT HOLD YOU BACK
When another person who is important to you holds you back, it can be soul crushing. Be it a parent, loved one, partner or friend, it hurts to not have their support. It is especially hard when it’s a voice from the past that you haven’t dropped. When you stay in a relationship in reality or in your mind that negates your potential, no matter who it is or why they act like this, you are destined to feel bad. It is difficult to impossible to thrive in situations like this.
It is important to understand why people are motivated to hold you back. It may be their issue of fear, misguided protection, or jealousy. Everyone has their issues, so begin by identifying theirs and then work on separating yourself from them you can see yourself more clearly. This takes work too, but you know you have to do it to be able to move on. Get the support you need to see yourself clearly, in the fullness of who you are, without the negativity of those around you.
Have your ever worked or lived in a stifling environment where everything seems like a dead end? They are no options to move up or on. They exist. There are work environments that have glass ceilings and dead-end career paths. And there are parts of the country where the economy is stalled and there are few options for growth. It affects everyone in the situation literally putting them to sleep believing that this is all there is. If you think you are in one, it is likely true.
Pull yourself up and begin exploring your options. Yes, it means change – you have to get out of there. Once you start making the first move, you will feel the energy beginning to rise and your vision for yourself coming back to life. You can and must push yourself to move on. Get the support you need to make sure you can move forward the way you want. There is another place waiting for your arrival.
We all have more potential than we think. The difference between those that reach for their potential and those that don’t lies in how you work through your blocks. Having a limited vision of yourself, negating yourself with negative self-talk, listening to people who block your ideas or staying stuck in stifling environments will keep you from stepping into your potential. Each one has a solution. You can move through the blocks with the right support and some determination.
