The vitriolic stories in the media has prompted me to write about how kindness can change lives. With the charged political climate creating hostility, opposing views warring against one another, I want to remind you that each of us can change the climate around us with simple acts of care and kindness.
It was the story of one man’s kindness toward young teens that made this point*. When he noticed them waiting for the school bus after having worked the night shift, he began feeding them at the diner across from the factory. Their lives were changed, * A similar story tells of a school custodian starting a “giving locker” for kids who need supplies. Devine Carama, with One Lexington, helps families and communities prevent gun violence*. We do this in our Diversion Court and through GreenRoom Exchange, that highlights the beauty and gifts of other cultures by presenting their music*.
Here are some ways your kindness can change lives:
NOTICE WHO IS IN NEED AND TAKE ACTION
Notice the friends or acquaintances who are going through a hard time. Reach out, let them know you are concerned, that you see their struggle, offer help and support. Being seen and recognized provides the seed of attention that starts to change lives. Even my dog, Bodhi, regularly provides love and affection to strangers – they now seek him out.
GET INVOLVED IN GROUPS THAT ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Despite what the media shows, there are good things going on through agencies that effectively help people, and they would love your involvement. There are homeless shelters, animal shelters, food kitchens, afterschool programs, mentoring opportunities. Follow the thread of your own interests and look for opportunities to be involved. Everyone benefits.
BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE
Be wary about buying into the fearful doomsday news that creates anxiety and hopefulness. It’s designed to make us dependent on the power brokers who are increasing their power by taking ours away. Stay focused on the positive things you can do by saying a kind word, spreading kindness and being helpful, taking care of those around you.
How are you doing now? Reach out if you’d like support for yourself.
