Last night we hosted Las Migas*, an all-female modern Flamenco band from Spain – their passion and joy lifted everyone up, filling the room with unity and connection. There has been glum discouragement post-election – an “oh no, what now” feeling. This was a reminder about what’s important and how to move on.
I do it through GreenRoom Exchange and with my work with the courts. Both offer ways to dispel hostile myths and divisiveness about people from other cultures and people who have mental health and substance abuse issues.
You can do it too, here’s how:
BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER
Despite the desire to hunker down and isolate, you need to push yourself to engage. The more diverse the group the better. This will lift everyone. We had Spanish speaking people from all over the world come together for the Las Migas show and the energy was ecstatic. Get out and be social.
SHARE WHAT YOU LOVE
I love music and I love helping people. Both bring joy and my attitude helps those around me embrace a similar spirit. We forget how powerful we are in making positive connections by bringing our best self to everywhere we show up. You can turn any setting into one of joy and connection. I set the tone for our engagement through GreenRoom Exchange and our court program by creating a welcoming experience. You can too.
EMBRACE THE POSITIVE
With both groups we focus on the opportunity to create a positive experience for everyone involved. This means extra hospitality for our international artists and creating a loving trauma-informed environment in our courtroom. Always, the takeaway is awe at the difference this kind of interaction creates. For the artists, it’s not about making money off them, but how we lift them up. For our court participants it’s about motivating through kindness and compliments, not criticism and punishment. These approaches change everything. The joy, unity and connection it creates will change our world if we all do it!
How does this sound to you? Reach out if you want to explore it.
