Maintaining balance between what you do and how you relax – your work and your fun – is an admirable goal. Don’t forget that life is supposed to be fun, interesting, expansive, even joyous!
Staying stressed, anxious, worried, overcommitted and overwhelmed is a constant state for many and it’s very bad for you. You know that. Balance is an important concept to consider and evaluate for yourself.
Here are some ways to maintain balance:
SCHEDULE YOUR FUN
I’m sure you keep your work life tightly scheduled, as most people do. Are you scheduling your fun, are you giving it equal weight? Having fun takes thought and planning. It doesn’t easily happen without clear intention.
Be clear on what you love to do and make sure there is time and space for it. At least weekly. You need it regularly, not just a once or twice a year vacation. I love canoeing and I want to do it more!
GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO RELAX
What does relaxation mean to you …reading, writing, meditation, walking, exercising, sleeping in, taking naps, sitting in quiet, gardening, swimming, playing, being creative, watching birds, hiking, biking, being in nature? They’re all good, all important aspects to re-ground and maintain balance.
Notice how much opportunity you give yourself to really relax, let go and enjoy yourself. Not trying to push yourself to do more and more.
INCLUDE FRIENDS, COMMUNITY, MUSIC, ART, TRAVEL
Balance also means enriching yourself in ways that spark creativity and personal growth. The pandemic took a toll on this aspect of our lives, and some are still not reengaging. Remember how stimulating exposure to new people, art, music and travel makes you excited to be alive. I immerse myself in all these things.
Give yourself a steady diet of inspiration to keep you enriched and motivated to learn and grow. This has become one of the most important aspects of my life – it’s a catalyst that helps me be more creative and productive.
