It may seem obvious to follow your joy, but many people put it off, thinking it’s something you squeeze into a week’s vacation. Instead, imagine it being an all the time, everyday thing?
This thought hit me during a trip to NYC, scouting for talent for our nonprofit, GreenRoom Exchange. As if my primary work as a therapist and social change agent wasn’t enough, I do this too. Why? Because it brings me joy, as does everything I do, all the time.
Here are some ideas on how to follow your joy.
ASK YOURSELF WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY
Experiencing joy is one of our purposes for living, which invites us to explore this idea more deeply. Knowing what brings you joy is an obvious starting place. I love learning and doing new things, traveling, meeting people and feeling challenged. The list is much longer, but the thread of commonality to these aspects is in all my activities, keeping me energized and happy. So, ask yourself, what gives you a lift?
LOOK FOR JOY IN EVERYDAY THINGS
There are also many quiet, peaceful, everyday things that bring me joy. Coffee and a lovely view, daily walks, reading, meditating, a great meal, quiet times with Lee and my animals. Joy’s in the satisfying little daily routines. It’s a perspective of appreciation you cultivate, as well as an action. And it’s in the unexpected, unplanned moments that grace us, like a gorgeous sunset, the antics of our animals or the humor of friends. Recognize what this means for you and ask if you have enough?
MAKE IT A DAILY PRIORITY
One thing we all have control over is our daily schedule. Notice all the joyous moments throughout the day. Is your joy quota being filled? Taking time to savor those moments is essential if you want the feeling of joy to permeate your being. This is not to say there isn’t stress and frustration, even in the things that bring joy. What’s important is adopting the mindset of noticing the positive as a protective measure to stay happy, content and satisfied amidst external chaos. If you are continually feeling anything less, it’s a sign that you need to make a change.
