Lee received the Life Time Achievement Award from the Lexington Music Awards this year. It’s the fourth year he’s been honored with recognition, but this one takes the prize. He spent years turning down the nominations done by the public, saying that it’s unfair to others and prizes don’t represent the motivation for playing music. It’s true, but I finally talked him into accepting the recognition.
Here are some of the reasons why I think it’s important.
SAYS THANK YOU
Many people pour their heart and soul into what they do with little reward, be that financial or otherwise. It’s particularly true in the arts fields, except for the top 1%, who reap worldwide accolades. It’s certainly true in the service field, where I am. After a lifetime of giving your best, having an occasion to say thank you is important. Lee has put 50 years of heart into what he does musically – he deserves this!
SETS THE BAR
Recognition of all kind is a way of setting the standard, the bar against which excellence is judged. It’s important to define what this means and to acknowledge those who push the envelop to higher levels. This inspires everyone to keep growing, exploring and developing their craft.
PROVIDES CREDIT FOR OTHERS
A ceremony that provides recognition is also an opportunity to acknowledge and credit all the other people who make things happen. This is true in every field. Every band has members, not just the leader, every event involves a myriad of technical support and consultants. All the roles are important and when one is awarded, everyone else is given a part of the glory. Give recognition widely. It supports many and lifts up everyone.
Let me know if this is something you’d like to explore.
