This quote, attributed to John F. Kennedy, “The rising tide lifts all boats” was initially a reference to the product of good economic policy, but it’s been adapted to refer to what happens when we lift others up, especially those who have been squashed, such as the LGBTQ+ community. As we enter Pride Month, it’s fitting to revisit this concept, especially with the back lash against DEI policies nationwide.
Change occurs when we conceptualize the need and organize to fight for it. It took over 200 years for slaves to be freed, over 200 years for women to have the right to vote, 100 years for the civil rights law to pass. And the fight is ongoing.
Even here in Lexington KY, one of 500 cities nationwide designated as having Municipal Equality, it look 30 years to pass ordinances that ensure fairness. Yet the pushback to reclaim power from women, people with different gender identity, people of color, and different cultures is real. The fight is now.
Where do you stand on these issues? Here are some thoughts to consider – you are needed in the fight.
HOW HAVE YOU GROWN AND BEEN LIFTED BY HELPING ANOTHER?
Just as JFK’s quote implies, anytime you lift someone else up, you too receive the benefit of learning, growing, being better through the expansion. That has been true throughout my career. I’m always grateful for the opportunity to help.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM SOMEONE OF A DIFFERENT GENDER, RACE, CULTURE, OR BELIEF?
Some of the greatest insights come from understanding and putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. Our world view is limited by our experiences and broadened by understanding someone else’s. My work through our non-profit, with people from all over the world has shown me the beauty and dignity of other’s beliefs and cultures.
HOW CAN YOU PUT THIS CONCEPT INTO ACTION?
If you’ve experienced an expansion of yourself through helping and engaging with others different from yourself then you know JFK’s quote is accurate. We’re all lifted when we recognize, respect and lift up others. Consider how you can do this now. Join a protest, march, donate, volunteer. Be engaged.
