Your purpose and someone’s needs create an intersection that are mutually self-fulfilling. This may seem obvious, but it came to me like an epiphany whiling visiting a friend in the hospital. It is a two-way relationship between need and someone’s purpose.
This perspective surfaced while talking to my friend, who’s uncomfortable being taken care of by others. I can relate and if you are a self-sufficient type, like him, I bet you can too. Yet for anyone in a hospital or requiring care, your need is directly aligned with someone’s skill set and purpose.
Let’s look at the reciprocity of this give and take relationship more closely.
THE FALLACY OF SHUTTERING YOUR PURPOSE AND NEEDS
So many people underestimate the power of their purpose and in equal measure deny taking care of their needs. It’s like a shuttered window, where we only let so much of our light out and allow so much of other’s light in. We are missing the point.
Being healthy and being fully in our power means being open to both our purpose and needs – they create symmetry, an equal energetic exchange. It’s a positive both ways. The more we acknowledge them, the healthier we become. So, understand how you discount your full power and dismiss your needs and decide to claim your purpose and take care of yourself at the same time. They are not mutually exclusive.
CLAIM YOUR PURPOSE
No matter what you do, no matter your field or skill, you are filling a purpose. You are filling a need that has demand. Let that sink in. Think about all the things you take for granted that have important purpose. You raise kids, grow a garden, care for family, nurture your friends, support your community, all that in addition to your work; It’s all important.
So many people are not sure of their value. It shows up as uncertainty and difficulty monetizing their worth. Even I’ve had to work on this. I’m just now comfortable claiming my full value – a sad truth given I have over 3 decades of experience! While a sense of purpose is unrelated to money, being able to acknowledge your worth is synonymous with accepting the gifts of talent you’ve been given, along with the years of hard work and experience to develop them. Add it all up and claim it – let your light shine!
MEET YOUR NEEDS
Recognizing and responding to your own needs seems to be even harder for people. Especially for those in the service industry. It’s a puzzle to me why there is such a value on martyrdom. We would rather be wounded than whole?
For every internal hole that needs to be filled, emotional, physical, mental or spiritual, there is someone who’s entire purpose is to meet it. Think about that. You are denying yourselves and someone else the pleasure and purpose of sharing their gift. Recognize what you need – give it to yourself. You will be making yourself whole.
ALLOW YOUR PURPOSE AND NEEDS TO BE FILLED
The solution. Allow – Allow – Allow. Recognize your gifts and allow them to shine. Recognize your needs and allow them to be met. There is really nothing more than that. It is simple – quit making it complicated!
Here are recent examples of allowing purpose and need to be filled in my life:
PURPOSE– My husband, Lee, composes beautiful music, which will finally be released on streaming services next week. (more on that soon) Our artist friend on hearing it says, “It’s beautiful and exactly what I need – this is the kind of music that inspires me to paint”. Lee’s purpose fills her need.
NEED – I am busy and dealing with social media is a pain that is often over my head. I finally admitted I need help. I hired Carla, who is in the Philippines, as my Virtual Assistant to help me. My needs help her meet her purpose to support her family. We are both happy.
There is a reciprocity between our purpose and needs that once embraced, can make us whole. Understand how you limit your purpose and discount your needs, keeping them from being fully actualized. Vow that you will claim your purpose, while addressing your needs. Allow your light to shine out and allows others light to shine in, as there is joy in both.
