Moving Away From Divisive Thinking – Finding The Wisdom Of Middle Ground

Divisive thinking, with strong pro and con positions, are being engrained in us through the constant drone of the media. The stronger the opinion, the more it fuels people to pay attention, to react, while they profit. We’re being groomed, conditioned, programmed, preferences curated for extreme thinking. It’s destroying us. We have to find middle ground.

The recent violence at a Trump rally, and the violence from Jan 6th, have the same origin of hatred, fear, extreme and polarizing positions generating extreme behavior. How do we find middle ground, where the truth of both sides are understood?

Here are some thoughts:

UNDERSTAND THE LAW OF POLARITY

The Law of Polarity says that everything exists on a continuum of + to -, hot to cold, high to low. With the media’s focus on opinion, we’re being conditioned to take a stand at one end of the continuum, with force. Using words like “I love vs. I hate” to the point that it becomes part of our identity and something we say with pride.  It’s causing us to lose site of the bigger picture, that both ends have merit and purpose.

PRACTICE THE POINT OF NEUTRALITY – MIDDLE GROUND

The healthy place is in the middle – the point of neutrality. From the point of neutrality, you can see both ends clearly, they too have both pros and cons to them. So, within each extreme of a polarity are the nuances of + and -. There is not all good and all bad. There just is and each has elements of truth. Try noticing the nuances of each position and appreciate it – notice and accept, without judgment.

FIND YOUR WISDOM – YOUR MIDDLE GROUND

From the point of neutrality, find your own wisdom, your truth that lies somewhere along any continuum. You’ll notice that you’re not fixed rigidly or continually at one end or the other – your truth will slide around. The more you practice this, it becomes harder to stay fixed at an extreme. Wisdom gives you the ability to see all perspectives; it’s non-dualistic and unifying.  Accept what is, not letting previous experience and biases affect your perception. It’s non-divisive. It’s a solution to this mess.
