This holiday can be a glorious time for family unity or it can be tough if your family is not close or unified. For years now, I’ve been hosting a holiday party for friends and a holiday dinner for friends without family nearby. It makes for a lively way to share the spirit of the season. I have a lot to be grateful for.
The words of Stephen Stills’s song “Love The One You’re With” came to mind as I thought about this.* It’s a timeless message. Let me share it.

Did the words and lyrics bring the tune to mind – it’s so recognizable. And did you notice how it speaks to the power of polarity? “There is a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove”. In every situation there is it’s opposite, if you’re not happy in your current situation, look for what is right next to you that you do like. Find it and change the way you are thinking and feeling.
In my work with the courts, I grieve for the people who are sitting in jail and shelters this holiday or who have no one to be with. Its such a difficult reality. I wish to send this message to all who are in less than ideal situations. Find something to enjoy – and find a way to “love the one you’re with”.
