Inspiration swirls around you, even if you aren’t looking for it, or needing it, especially when you’re open to change. I was in NYC for a music conference with Lee Carroll and Alioune Guisse, where inspiration flowed from a firehose, so much so, you couldn’t take it all in. But if you were open and ready, it was there in a myriad of forms waiting to be noticed. From dizzying promotions, music of every kind and people eager to connect; you’d have to be asleep to not find something.
We went there to network for our non-profit and came away with much more. It was the ah-ha moments that were most important – the spark that initiates change, often in unexpected ways.
Here are some of the simple ways I watched it take hold of me and the friends I was around.
THE SPARK OF AN IDEA
I was awed by the boldness, originality and authenticity of some of the musical presentations. Mind you, there were plenty that weren’t, but I found inspiration in numerous performers who were clearly divinely inspired. It stimulated Alioune to write a song in a day, and for me to know that it’s time to put my ideas out there. Lee realized that he is already operating at the highest level of anything we saw and needs to move his gorgeous music forward.
THE WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT
When we talked about what we are doing with GreenRoom Exchange, people were excited and complimentary. When they heard Alioune and Lee’s music, they were genuinely impressed. Sometimes it takes hearing it from industry experts, strangers really, to get perspective. It spurred Alioune to realize he’s been stuck and he’s ready to get out of his rut.
THE RIGHT PEOPLE/INFORMATION AT THE RIGHT TIME
Often you don’t know what you don’t know until it hits you in the face. We realized that – we need the right connections, solid relationships with people we can trust, relate to and work with. The creative work is done. That’s where our instincts came in to make genuine connections, which came easily. Now we need to be proactive to push it forward. I need to do that with my work too.
