We’re More Alike Than Different

The idea that we’re more alike than different is central to our non-profit, GreenRoom Exchange. We seek to counter the divisiveness that provokes conflict. We’ve been hosting musicians and dancers from different countries for years, most recently sponsoring Gideon Alorwoyie’s Afrikania from Ghana for 6 days of events and workshops. As always, it was an exciting dive into a different culture with people we have come to love.

Lee and I have traveled to the Volta Region of Ghana three times as a guest of Gideon Alorwoyie, Master Drummer, Ewe Chief, and Priest. We’ve had profound and deeply moving experiences there that have changed how we look at things.

Here are a few lessons I’ve come away with that I’d like to share.

LOVE IS THE SAME EVERYWHERE

Love for your family and friends, your country and beliefs are the same everywhere. Being proud of your identity and holding those in your inner circle close is part of what gives you confidence, no matter where you are from. We have been included as family by this group of people, given tribal names and called Auntie and Uncle by his children. It’s always a love fest when we get together.

THERE IS INTEGRITY IN BELIEFS

The spiritual beliefs of the Ewe are complex, reverent, and profound. The rituals they use in honoring and giving thanks involve pouring libations of different spirits on the ground, but the process of saying prayers, and using prayer beads is just as heart felt. Their belief that the more aligned and spiritually connected you are to your “star” or purpose in life, the more you’ll find satisfaction and meaning, has greatly influenced me. It’s become a cornerstone of my Transformational Coaching work.

WE ALL GIVE AND DO OUR BEST

I love watching Afrikania perform. There is a direct relationship between the drumming and the dance moves, with the drums serving as a form of communication giving directions. Fascinating. Their drumming and dance workshops are always popular. What is also true is they work hard to do their best, like we all strive to do.

Is there anything about this that speaks to you? Reach out if you want to talk.
